Question: What would help me become a better witness for Christ?
The Holy Spirit is already at work in the lives of people you know. He is convincing them of sin and right living. He is preparing people for you to talk to about their spiritual well being. He will help you to be far more effective than you imagine.
Praying sincerely and frequently for the Holy Spirit's power and guidance would enhance your witnessing ability. Most witnesses experience fear and need courage. So eager learners need God's strength and confidence. The Holy Spirit guides us in what to say and how to come across. Do not fear making mistakes. You will make mistakes, but God will override your errors with His love and with your ability to apologize and to clarify.
Only a few mentors in evangelism exist. People with the gift of evangelism make up only 1.9% of your congregation. Find someone to coach you if you can. But if not simply try witnessing on your own. You will do better than you think. You might protest saying, "But you don't know me. How can you make the blanket statement that I will do alright?" People who love God and love people find a way to share their faith in acceptable and even creative ways.
Tell stories of God's goodness, His love, His guidance, His answers to prayer. Watch how people respond. When they are interested, go a little farther--tell them more. Another approach: offer to pray for people who tell you about difficulties in their lives. Then follow up to see if God has answered prayer. Develop a relationship of concern.
Become a good conversationalist. Communicate with words and facial expressions that you like them and are interested in them as persons. They will enjoy you. As your friendship unfolds you will find increasing opportunities to talk about the Lord.
